The Associate Design Engineer at Confidential Client is an entry-level role responsible for developing and executing control and electrical engineering solutions for custom food processing equipment. The position involves leading diverse project teams to design, document, and transfer ownership of moderately complex machinery, supporting process automation and capacity expansion initiatives. What You’ll Do
This entry-level engineering role supports the design, development, and handoff of custom processing equipment. Typical responsibilities include:
- Lead cross-functional project teams to deliver machine, process, or system designs of moderate complexity that meet functional, sanitary, ergonomic, cost, and maintainability goals.
- Use machine design software and tools to develop mechanical and electrical/control systems per project requirements.
- Create documentation and training materials and lead transfer-of-ownership activities with plant customers (operations, maintenance, sanitation).
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and internal requirements during project execution.
- Document design decisions in accordance with legal and internal documentation standards.
- Mentor and support contract designers, programming technicians, and engineering technicians; may involve supervising an entry-level salaried engineer.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (ABET-accredited electrical engineering or related engineering discipline preferred) completing graduation in Dec 2026 or May 2027; minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA preferred.
- Hands-on controls, automation, robotics, or programming experience demonstrated via robotics programs (FRC, VEX), senior/capstone projects leading control development, or personal projects with Arduino/Raspberry Pi/microcontrollers.
- Strong technical and mechanical aptitude, plus excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to lead diverse teams using standard project management practices.
- Demonstrated initiative, innovation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Willingness to relocate and to work non-traditional hours when required (may include 2nd/3rd shifts, weekends, Tuesday–Saturday shifts, rotating schedules).
- Must be 18 years of age or older for plant-based roles.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer and must not require future employer-sponsored visa sponsorship.
- Ability to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and begin Engineer-in-Training status within 6 months.
- Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer license in Minnesota within 5 years.
Preferred
- Already passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (EIT status).
- Experience with Rockwell Automation Studio 5000 Logix Designer and/or FactoryTalk View ME from internships, co-ops, or academic projects.
- Familiarity with electrical and controls CAD software (AutoCAD Electrical preferred; equivalent packages acceptable).
Hours
- Full-time, salaried position.
Location
- On-site in Hayward, MN. Relocation required if not local.
Training
- Up to six weeks of hands-on training before department assignment.
- Training includes shadowing experienced maintenance engineers and instruction in environmental and regulatory compliance, Economic Value Added (EVA), and HACCP.
- Enterprise and plant orientation sessions covering product, company, and leadership topics.
Advancement
- Maintenance engineering can lead to roles in corporate engineering, project engineering, design engineering, or plant management.

- Competitive salary range: $70,900 – $99,275 annually.

Notes
- This role is intended as a probationary associate position, with expectation to qualify into a design engineer within approximately 24 months.
