What You’ll Do

This entry-level engineering role supports the design, controls, and electrical development of custom food-processing equipment and associated automation systems. You will work on projects that deliver new equipment, modify existing systems, and support plant teams. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional project teams to deliver machine, process, or system designs of moderate complexity that meet sanitary, ergonomic, cost, and maintainability goals
  • Develop and apply control and electrical designs using industry tools and CAD software
  • Support integration of automation, robotics, and industrial communication protocols into equipment designs
  • Prepare documentation, operation manuals, and training materials for plant handoff
  • Train and support plant personnel (operations, maintenance, sanitation) during project turnover
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and internal requirements throughout design and execution
  • Oversee and mentor contract designers, technicians, and possible junior engineers involved in projects

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree (ABET-accredited preferred) in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Engineering Technology, Agriculture Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field — graduating December 2026 or May 2027 preferred; minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA preferred
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in controls, automation, robotics, or programming via robotics competitions (FRC, VEX), senior/capstone projects, internships, or personal projects (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, microcontrollers, sensors, motors)
  • Strong technical aptitude, initiative, creativity, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication and demonstrated team leadership skills
  • Ability to lead diverse teams and apply project-management best practices
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer and must not require visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • Must be 18 years of age or older (site requirement for plant roles)
  • Willingness to relocate and to work non-traditional shifts as required (2nd/3rd shifts, weekends, rotating schedules)
  • Ability to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and enter Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status within 6 months, and ability to pursue a PE license in Minnesota within 5 years

Preferred

  • FE passed and EIT status already obtained
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation Studio 5000 Logix Designer and/or FactoryTalk View ME
  • Familiarity with electrical CAD tools (AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent)

  • Competitive salary range: $70,900 – $99,275 annually (provided by the client)

Training & Advancement

  • Up to six weeks of hands-on, structured onboarding and shadowing before assignment to a department
  • Training includes plant orientation, Environmental & Regulatory Compliance, Economic Value Added (EVA), and HACCP
  • This role is a probationary path expected to progress into a Design Engineer role within ~24 months
  • Career paths may include corporate engineering, project engineering, design engineering, or plant management; internal promotion is encouraged

Worksite & Schedule

  • On-site, full-time position based in Hayward, MN
  • Hours: salaried full-time; candidate should be open to non-traditional shift schedules as needed by plant operations
