What You’ll Do

The Assistant Substation Engineer will support design and delivery of high‑voltage electrical substation projects (13 kV to 765 kV) under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). This is an early‑career / new‑grad friendly role working with multidisciplinary teams through design and construction.

  • Assist in substation design from concept through construction support, including physical layouts (above and below grade).
  • Help prepare substation design packages: protective relaying & control schematics, grounding and lightning studies, lighting and security designs.
  • Support electrical calculations: insulation coordination, AC station service, DC/battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fill.
  • Draft design sketches, equipment specifications, bills of materials, and cost estimates.
  • Apply industry standards and utility guidelines (IEEE, NESC, etc.) in design work and reviews.
  • Participate in field inspections and site visits for substation facilities on public and private systems.
  • Help compile project data, prepare technical reports, and support client presentations and visualizations.
  • Identify and communicate project issues and assist project managers in problem resolution.
  • Follow project schedules and internal QA/QC procedures to meet deliverable deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and comply with company policies and safety standards.

Qualifications

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements and demonstrate strong technical curiosity and teamwork will be considered.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related degree from an ABET‑accredited program required.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology (ABET‑accredited) plus successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Engineers‑in‑Training (EIT) certification preferred.
  • Prior internship or related consulting experience preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with IEEE and NESC standards and basic substation engineering principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; aptitude for technical software and analysis tools a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and demonstrated critical thinking.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred; campus or community involvement a plus.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the United States without sponsorship.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $80,000 — $120,000 per year (range provided in compliance with applicable local/state regulations and subject to factors such as experience, education, and work location).
  • Eligible employees may participate in a discretionary year‑end incentive program.

Location & Logistics

  • Primary location: Columbus, OH. Other location option: Akron, OH.
  • Full‑time position. Travel approximately 10% of the time for site visits and client work.
  • Open to recent graduates / early‑career candidates (Job Hire Type: New Grad).
