What You’ll Do
This entry-level Assistant Resident Engineer role supports field-level management and contract administration for roadway, utility, and structure projects. You will work alongside the Resident Engineer and higher-level staff to ensure projects are built to plan, on schedule, and in compliance with agency and permitting requirements.
Key responsibilities:
- Perform project field inspections and document construction progress
- Prepare monthly and final pay estimates
- Create, review, and evaluate supplemental agreements and claims
- Ensure compliance with environmental and erosion-control permits and agency requirements
- Assist with constructability reviews and resolve field issues
- Serve as the DOT project representative in meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the public
- Supervise and mentor lower-level technicians as assigned
- Use electronic tablets, SharePoint, HICAMS, and other agency tools for documentation and reporting
- Apply and uphold Department safety standards on site
Who We’re Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)
To be considered, applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or an applicable engineering field from an accredited institution; OR an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Demonstrated sound engineering judgment and independent decision-making
- Willingness and ability to perform moderate physical activity (walking, climbing, kneeling, standing) and to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle for work duties
- May require registration as a Professional Engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (per position needs)
Preferred Skills & Experience
Management prefers candidates who have:
- Experience reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contract documents
- Experience administering construction contracts, preparing pay estimates, or evaluating change orders
- Experience directing, assisting, or training subordinate employees
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction inspection practices, and construction surveying concepts
- Familiarity with SharePoint, HICAMS, tablets, and common construction documentation tools
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Field work on active construction sites with exposure to moving equipment, high traffic volumes, heights (over water or traffic), and weather variations
- May require occasional night, weekend, or holiday work based on project needs
- Safety toe shoes and other PPE required on site
- Ability to travel within the assigned region and operate a motor vehicle for job duties
Compensation
- Salary Grade NC16 — $57,983 to $101,470 per year (salary grade and range from source posting)
