Role summary
Confidential Client is seeking an Assistant Engineer (As‑Needed / Hybrid, Part‑time) to support public‑works planning, design, construction, and maintenance projects. This is an entry‑level engineering position ideal for recent civil engineering graduates or engineers with limited professional experience. The role includes office and field work and may require occasional site visits and business‑related driving.

Key responsibilities
- Perform engineering calculations and prepare plans, specifications, and estimates for public works construction projects.
- Compile, review, and summarize engineering data for reports and technical studies.
- Conduct field measurements and inspections; record and organize field data.
- Support design and construction tasks under supervision, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Maintain databases, spreadsheets and project reports to monitor design progress and deliverables.
- Coordinate with project teams, field staff, utility companies, consultants, and contractors.
- Maintain discipline‑specific standards and codes:
- Roadway Design — Caltrans and AASHTO standards and specifications.
- Utility Design — NASSCO and AWWA specifications.
- Structural Design — Caltrans Bridge design standards and California Building Code.
- Assist with project scheduling and budgeting as assigned.
- Perform other related tasks and duties as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- 0+ years of progressive engineering experience (entry‑level acceptable).
- Current California EIT (Engineer‑in‑Training) license is highly desired.
- Ability to perform engineering computations and review plans and technical studies.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, modeling tools, or other design‑aide software.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to travel to job sites as needed and to perform field inspections.
- Valid driver’s license required for assignments that include business‑related driving.
Working conditions & expectations
- General office environment with hybrid schedule; periodic field work and site visits.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team on multiple concurrent projects and deadlines.
- May require occasional overtime during peak project phases.
- Physical tasks include walking, bending, and occasional lifting (up to ~10 lbs).
- Work with detailed documents and drawings; must be able to maintain focus for extended periods.
