What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is hiring an Assistant Engineer to support municipal public works projects in Cudahy, CA. This is an entry-level civil engineering role with responsibilities in both office and field settings. You will help deliver capital improvement projects, perform engineering plan checks, support permitting and public counter services, assist with environmental compliance (including stormwater/NPDES), conduct field inspections, and prepare technical documentation and grant materials.
Key responsibilities include:
- Prepare and review engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports for public works infrastructure (streets, water, sewer, storm drains).
- Assist project managers with scopes, budgets, schedules, and coordination with consultants, contractors, and utilities.
- Perform engineering plan checks and development review to ensure compliance with municipal codes and design standards.
- Staff the Public Works Counter to process permits (grading, encroachment, utility connections, right-of-way), issue permits, and collect fees.
- Support environmental programs: NPDES/stormwater compliance, industrial waste permitting, inspections, tracking, and reporting.
- Conduct field inspections to verify construction compliance with approved plans and specifications.
- Use AutoCAD, GIS, and related software for drafting, mapping, and data analysis.
- Assist in grant application preparation and grant administration tasks.
- Prepare technical correspondence, reports, presentations, and inspection documentation.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of 1 year of civil engineering experience (internships or co-op experience count toward this requirement).
- Ability to obtain or possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license is highly desirable.
Preferred:
- Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certificate or progress toward EIT/FE.
- Experience with AutoCAD and GIS.
- Familiarity with public works permitting, plan review, and municipal codes.
- Experience supporting stormwater/NPDES programs or environmental compliance.

Compensation & Work Type
- Employment type: Full-time
- Salary range (provided by client): $86,808 – $105,516 per year

- Combination of office work and frequent field inspections; ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally.
