Position overview

This Assistant Chemical Engineer (Water, Municipal) role supports municipal and industrial water projects in Chicago, IL. You will work with interdisciplinary design teams under the direction of licensed engineers to develop chemical engineering solutions—from concept through construction—focusing on water and wastewater systems, process equipment, and related infrastructure for public and private clients. What You’ll Do

The role includes hands-on engineering tasks and team support across design and field phases:

• Assist in chemical/process design for water and municipal projects from concept through design completion
• Modify and review production drawings and CAD deliverables for compliance and constructability
• Support development of chemical components, process calculations, and equipment specifications
• Conduct research, compile project data, and assist senior engineers with analyses
• Participate in client presentations, shop drawing reviews, and contract administration
• Perform field inspections, measurements, and calculations as required (travel up to ~25%)
• Support construction-phase coordination and resolve design questions in the field
• Follow firm policies, safety rules, and quality-control procedures

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or closely related field from an accredited program (ABET accreditation strongly preferred)
• Prior internship or consulting experience in chemical/process or water engineering preferred
• Basic knowledge of standard chemical engineering principles and design practices
• Familiarity with process simulation tools (HYSYS, Aspen, HTRI) is a plus
• Proficient with Microsoft Office; CAD experience helpful
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills; attention to detail
• Good written and verbal communication skills; ability to contribute in client-facing settings
• Demonstrated collaboration and team-building skills; leadership potential
• EIT (Engineer in Training) certification preferred
• Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred for new-grad applicants

Compensation & Benefits

• Base salary range: $85,000 – $125,000 per year (range provided in compliance with applicable regulations for this Chicago, IL role)
• Total compensation includes eligibility for discretionary year-end incentive bonus and other programs
• Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental, vision, disability, 401(k), Employee Stock Ownership Plan (for eligible employees), paid time off, and wellness programs
• Travel: approximately 25% (field visits, client meetings)
