What You’ll Do
This listing is for an Architectural History Specialist based in Saint Louis, MO (hybrid office + field). Estimated pay: $59,559 per year (estimated).
- Conduct architectural resource surveys: field identification, measured/photographic documentation, and notes for buildings, structures, and districts.
- Perform archival and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) or Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) file research to identify previously recorded resources.
- Assist in preparing Effects Determinations, historic context statements, and Historic Resources tables for technical reports.
- Support senior staff and project managers with data collection, QA/QC of deliverables, and coordination with outside agencies (SHPO, THPO, local historic commissions).
- Travel to project sites for field evaluations (approximately 10%; occasional overnight travel).
- Maintain accurate project files, field notes, and photographic records; follow company health & safety protocols in office and field settings.
Required Skills & Abilities

- Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for coordination with project teams and external agencies.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field evaluations (~10%).
Preferred Experience
- Experience with SHPO/THPO research procedures and Section 106 / NHPA review.
- Familiarity with National Register of Historic Places criteria and historic context development.
- Experience with GIS, digital photo documentation, or other field documentation tools.
- Internship, field school, or 0–2 years relevant professional experience in historic preservation or architectural history.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Architecture, History, Art History, or a related field.
- 0–2 years of relevant experience; internships or field school experience are a plus.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid driver’s license required.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and navigate uneven outdoor terrain at historic sites.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs (e.g., cameras, tripods, field gear) and operate cameras, measuring tools, and laptops/tablets.
- Sufficient visual acuity to read maps, records, and architectural details.
- Ability to wear required PPE and tolerate outdoor weather conditions.
Work Environment & Travel
- Hybrid role: office-based and field-based work.
- Travel for field evaluations is required (~10% of time), with occasional overnight stays.
- Work may occur at older or historic properties and active construction sites; projects will follow site-specific safety protocols.
Potential Hazards & Safety
- May encounter asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, mold, or other hazards at older structures. Appropriate PPE and safety procedures are required and provided.
Compensation & Benefits
- Estimated salary: $59,559 per year (estimated — final offer will depend on qualifications, experience, and other business considerations).
