Role overview
The Confidential Client is hiring an AML & Sanctions Data Scientist (Senior Associate) to join their Financial Crime / AML team in New York, NY. You will apply machine learning, NLP and analytics to detect and reduce financial crime risk, mentor junior team members, and deliver technical solutions that translate client requirements into operational models.
Key responsibilities
- Apply machine learning and natural language processing to financial-crime and sanctions challenges
- Build, validate, and monitor ML models for transaction screening, sanctions filtering, and suspicious activity detection
- Use Python and SQL to analyze complex, structured and unstructured datasets
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into analytical solutions
- Mentor and review work from junior associates
- Support model deployment and monitoring workflows (MLOps best practices)
- Communicate technical results and recommended actions to non-technical stakeholders
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer/Information Science, Economics, Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, or related field
- ~3 years of professional experience in data science / machine learning (experience working on AML/financial crime is strongly preferred)
- Proficiency in Python and SQL
- Demonstrated experience developing and evaluating machine learning models
- Strong problem solving, communication, and client-facing skills
Preferred / Nice-to-have
- Experience mentoring or leading junior team members
- Familiarity with MLOps practices for model monitoring and CI/CD
- Experience with ML frameworks and libraries (scikit-learn, XGBoost, LightGBM, Hugging Face)
- Experience working with cloud platforms and containerization (AWS/Azure/GCP, Docker, Kubernetes)
- Comfortable working with both structured and unstructured data
- Knowledge of model evaluation metrics across tasks (classification, ranking, NLP)
Compensation & benefits
- Salary range: $77,000 - $202,000 (Actual compensation within this range will depend on skills, experience, qualifications and applicable employment laws.)
- Eligible for discretionary annual bonus and standard benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, etc.)
- The Confidential Client follows applicable New York pay transparency and employment laws.
