Air Quality Engineer

Role & Overview
Location: Warrenville, IL (onsite/office-based)
This is a full-time contract role with a confidential client. As an Air Quality Engineer you will evaluate and present information regarding atmospheric emissions from proposed processes and equipment in support of state and federal air permit applications. You will perform engineering calculations, compile permit application documents, coordinate with clients to gather project information, communicate with agency personnel, and evaluate pollution control technologies.
What You’ll Do
- Perform atmospheric emissions inventory calculations and prepare documentation for air permit applications
- Conduct engineering calculations to quantify emissions from processes and equipment
- Prepare and compile permit application packages for state and federal agencies
- Perform dispersion modeling using AERMOD and interpret results for permitting and compliance
- Evaluate and recommend pollution control technologies and mitigation strategies
- Coordinate and meet with clients to collect project data and convey technical findings
- Communicate with regulatory agency staff and assist with permit negotiations or responses
- Support New Source Review (NSR) procedures and ensure regulatory compliance
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and mentor less-experienced staff where applicable
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Meteorology, or a related field
- 0+ years’ consulting, compliance, or industry experience — entry-level candidates with internship experience are encouraged to apply
- Experience (or coursework/internship exposure) with atmospheric emission inventory calculations and air permit preparation
- Hands-on experience with AERMOD dispersion modeling preferred
- Familiarity with New Source Review procedures and air compliance matters for industries such as natural gas, manufacturing, or power
- Knowledge of pollution control technologies and practical evaluation of control options
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear technical reports and present findings to clients and regulators
- Authorized to work in the U.S. for the Confidential Client without sponsorship
Nice-to-Have / Preferred
- Prior internship experience in air quality, permitting, or environmental consulting
- Experience working directly with state or federal permitting agencies
- Experience with other air modeling tools or regulatory permitting software
