Position Overview
Confidential Client is hiring an entry-level Agricultural / Standards Inspector to join its Agriculture, Weights & Measures team in San Diego, CA. This full-time role focuses on protecting public health, supporting local agriculture, and ensuring accuracy in commercial weighing, measuring, and packaged goods. The position involves field inspections, investigations, enforcement actions, and licensing-related duties.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct inspections and investigations related to pesticide use, pest prevention and control.
- Inspect commodities, apiaries, and certified producer/farmers’ market operations for regulatory compliance.
- Perform export certification-related inspections and document preparation.
- Test and verify weighing and measuring devices, packaged goods net quantity, and retail price accuracy.
- Enforce regulations for hazardous materials, storm water, petroleum products, and weigh-master documentation.
- Prepare written inspection reports, maintain case files, and provide testimony when required.
- Interact with the public, growers, and businesses to explain requirements and provide education on compliance.
Hiring Timeline & Important Dates
- Interviews: Week of November 16, 2026.
- Job offer and background process: Begins shortly after interviews.
- Pre-employment medical screening: Approximately 3 days after completed background investigation.
- Anticipated start date: Based on successful completion of screening and mutual agreement.
Salary & Employment Type
- Full-time.
- Salary range: $72,592 — $89,148.80 per year. Selected candidates will be hired at Step 1 ($72,592). Future salary increase scheduled: June 2027 — 3.0% to base pay.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualification to take the licensing examination given by the State of California Department of Food and Agriculture for County Agriculture Inspector or County Weights and Measures Inspector. One of the following is required:
- Possession of one or more valid statewide specific category licenses as a County Agricultural Inspector / Biologist; OR
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college with specialization in one or more appropriate disciplines in agricultural, biological, chemical, or physical sciences; OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in any discipline plus at least 30 semester units (or equivalent) in one or a combination of these areas: Agricultural Science, Biological Science, Chemical Science, Physical Science, Mathematics, and/or Statistics.
Educational requirements in subsection (2) may be met by degree program specialization or additional college-level coursework totaling at least 30 semester units.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Field inspection experience, agricultural or biological science background, or prior regulatory/compliance work.
- Ability to prepare clear written reports and maintain organized case files.
- Strong interpersonal skills for public outreach and collaboration with agricultural stakeholders.
- Comfortable working outdoors and lifting/handling inspection equipment as required.
Conditions of Employment
- As part of pre-employment, candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening. Additional investigations may be conducted based on job duties.
