About the Role
Confidential Client (via Careertakes) is hiring an Accountant in Rochester, NY to maintain and analyze accounts and prepare financial reports for municipal and grant-funded programs. This role reports to the Assistant Director of Finance and will work with automated and manual accounting systems. Candidates should be comfortable reconciling ledgers, producing routine and specialized financial statements, and supporting compliance with federal and state grant rules.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain general and subsidiary ledgers; prepare and post adjustments and journal entries
- Produce, update and analyze financial reports using spreadsheet and database tools
- Reconcile manual records with the automated accounting system and take trial balances
- Verify claim vouchers and support accounts payable/receivable processes
- Support setup and maintenance of accounting systems for grant accounting and reporting to ensure regulatory compliance
- Prepare routine and specialized financial statements independently
- Advise internal departments, municipalities and vendors on accounting matters and automated systems
- Train or provide guidance to clerical staff; may supervise a small number of personnel
Minimum Qualifications
One of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
OR - Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Business Administration or closely related field with at least 18 semester hours in accounting, plus 1 year accounting and/or auditing experience
OR - Associate’s degree (or 60 college semester credit hours) including a minimum of 18 semester credits in accounting, plus 2 years of accounting and/or auditing experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures
- Ability to establish and maintain accurate accounting records and to analyze financial data
- Familiarity with spreadsheet and database software for reporting (e.g., Excel)
- Ability to interpret state, federal and local laws and rules related to financial reporting and grants
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments
- Ability to train and lead staff as needed
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Experience with municipal or public-sector accounting systems
- Prior experience managing grant accounting and reporting requirements
- Hands-on experience with ERP or automated accounting platforms used by government entities
