Position Overview

Confidential Client is seeking an Accountant I (F&A) to join their finance team in San Antonio, TX. Under general supervision, this is a professional accounting role supporting the analysis, reporting, and maintenance of organizational financial records for a public housing agency. This is a full-time position. Annual pay: $62,653.50.


What You’ll Do

This role focuses on general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll support, and budget tasks. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Manage business relationships with internal customers and vendors to ensure excellent service.
  • Prepare and post adjusting journal entries and reviewing journal entries for accuracy.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and bank statements; research and resolve variances.
  • Download, import, and reconcile data from external systems to the general ledger.
  • Prepare financial reports for leadership and support audit requests.
  • Support accounts receivable tasks: post, reconcile, research unidentified payments, and calculate allowance for doubtful accounts.
  • Support accounts payable tasks: review invoices, process payments, lead rotating check runs, submit automated banking files, and reconcile vendor statements.
  • Assist with budgeting tasks for a multi-million dollar annual budget, including data entry, analysis, and presentations for leadership or the Board.
  • Reconcile payroll-related accounts and prepare federal/state payroll tax reports as needed.
  • Document business processes, update training materials, and recommend process improvements.
  • Participate in Trauma Informed Care (TIC) initiatives and follow data governance practices.
  • Use Generative AI solutions ethically where applicable and follow organizational policies regarding their use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and basic requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum GPA requirement in accounting coursework: 2.5 or higher (as specified by the employer).
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check, education and work history verification, and drug screening.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and be insurable under the organization’s fleet and liability insurance carrier.
  • Proficiency or ability to learn cloud-based productivity tools (Google GSuite or Microsoft Office 365), including spreadsheets and collaboration tools.

Preferred / Valuable Experience

  • Knowledge of preparing internal and external financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow).
  • Experience with compliance and contract monitoring (debt covenants, trusts, loans, regulatory agreements).
  • Familiarity with cloud diagram/workflow tools (LucidChart, Visio) and basic VPN concepts for secure system access.
  • Prior experience in public agency, housing authority, or nonprofit accounting is a plus.

Technical Skills

To be successful you should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of GAAP, auditing principles, and standard accounting practices.
  • Ability to prepare, maintain, and reconcile accounting and budgetary data.
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort using accounting systems and financial reporting tools.
  • Ability to work confidentially and exercise discretion handling sensitive financial information.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet timelines with minimal supervision.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build cooperative working relationships.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based with frequent periods of sitting; some walking across properties and climbing stairs may be required.
